Top places to visit in Alberta

As mentioned above, Banff National Park is the main natural attraction in the province and one of the top attractions in the entire country.  The town at the foot of the mountain offers plenty of places to enjoy a light meal, do some shopping and learn more about your surroundings.  Enjoy a gondola ride up the mountain and, if you are up for it, you can enjoy an easy horseback ride past some of the best scenic spots.  Finish off your day in Banff by relaxing in the hot pools before heading back to your Alberta hotel room.  Another fun activity in Banff is a scenic drive along Icefields Parkway.  If you have your own rental car, this is the best way to cover the most ground and really explore the area.

Not too far from Banff is the city of Calgary.  This is the largest city in the province and there's plenty to see and do while you are here.  The local pubs and bars are great for a night out.  The locals are really friendly and will make you feel right at home.  A trip up the Calgary Tower is an absolute must!  From the observation deck you can see the whole city and spot significant buildings like the Saddledome – where the annual Calgary Stampede (rodeo) is held.

Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta and another superb city to visit while you are here.  One of the best places to “lose” yourself for a day is the West Edmonton Mall.  This mall literally has everything you can imagine and it even has its own hotel!  Inside you will find dozens of shops, a massive food court, a water park and even a mini theme park that includes a triple-loop rollercoaster!  If you are making your way around the city and you want the most scenic route from the local farmer's market to the downtown area, then make sure you take the trolley car at least once.  The views are amazing and it will give you a chance to really take in your surroundings.

Other things to do in Alberta

No matter which city or cities you plan on visiting, you can be sure that the nightlife and local theatres will keep you entertained well into the early hours.  In Calgary you will get the distinct sense of the cowboy culture.  During the Stampede, many business people actually go to work wearing jeans, cowboy boots and cowboy hats!  The Stampede is excellent for fun, food and shopping too; but if you are coming, book your Calgary, Alberta hotel accommodation early.  There are plenty of great souvenirs for sale to help you make your trip that much more memorable.

If you are moving around from place to place, you could even plan to make use of the many camp grounds throughout the province.  Unlike your more formal types of Alberta accommodation, camping will prove to be one of the most affordable options and you can really take in the outdoors while you're at it.  Some camp grounds are ideal for RV's and motorhomes so consider this as a motorhome rental vehicle option if you prefer to travel in extra comfort.
